The Gulf of Lacona is one of the most beautiful settings in the incredible landscape of Elba Island. Sailing across the emerald-green sea that characterizes the coast, many boats and tourists ride the calm waves to reach the most famous tourist and beach resorts.
It often happens that Porto Azzurro—the largest and most famous marina—can be crowded and difficult to dock at, especially during peak season. That’s why boats that choose to extend their journey as far as Golfo Stella can also find an excellent place to dock in the Gulf of Lacona.
It is a decidedly touristy anchorage, nestled in a picturesque setting. In fact, the anchorage blends perfectly with the stunning mountainous hills that overlook and shield a sandy beach of remarkable brilliance. The sandy seabed slopes gently away from the beach, allowing boats to anchor well away from the shore and, therefore, from swimmers.
Opposite the small beach, the water is about 6 meters deep over light-colored sand, where you can drop anchor (about 150 meters from shore), and about 8 meters deep 200–300 meters from shore. The Gulf of Lacona offers boaters good shelter from northern winds. It is surrounded by steep cliffs on both the left and right sides.
About 2 miles deep, it is surrounded on both sides by steep cliffs and features two beaches, one to the east and one to the west. Both offer the best anchorages for those who want to drop anchor and take advantage of the beautiful sea for a swim. Alternatively, you can go ashore and enjoy the coastal restaurants, which offer excellent service and authentic local cuisine.
The beaches also offer visitors attractions specifically tied to recreational and tourist activities by the sea. In fact, within the gulf, heading toward Capo Stella and/or Capo Fonza, you can enjoy scuba diving in the sandy seabed or rent jet skis. For those who are tired of sunbathing on a boat and would prefer to enjoy the mainland, the beach offers umbrella and lounge chair rentals.
The Gulf of Lacona is therefore not just a destination you can easily reach by car or bus. It offers a wonderful stretch of sparkling sea where you can moor, allowing you to enjoy the area’s many tourist and beach attractions. An incredible gem of Elba Island, it guarantees passing boats a memorable experience to record in their travel journals.
