Online pilot book : YACHT DIGEST’s guide to ports and anchorages is free and boundless

This summer I am going to Croatia. For once, a normal trip. Everyone will be there. And just think, I’ve been halfway around the world and I’ve never been there.
I’ve never been there and I want to prepare well for the trip, so I study the stops on the Yachtdigest.com online portolano..

The page opens to a map of Europe, with many light blue circles for each area, and numbers indicating the ports and anchorages in that area.

These are Google maps, so of course you can zoom in and out, all the way to the port plan, and switch from map view to satellite view.

Select a Geographical Area of the online Portolan, the guide to ports and anchorages

Mediterranean Ports and Anchorages Portolano

There is also a search form at the top where you can enter the location to search, and/or select the geographic area (and I’ll get distracted right away: Trentino Alto Adige… Ports in the Dolomites? Ah well sure, there are also the lakes: Torbole, Riva del Garda … how many memories! and what a wind, and what a scuffle!).

in the online pilot book you can also select just the search for ports or anchorages, and among the ports those-very useful! – with fuel stations.

Distracted by Garda memories, I immediately make a mistake and write Croatia in the Port Name/Anchorages field. They are right, it even said: in the“Port Name/Anchorages” field I should enter the name of the marina, not the geographic area or Town.

I then select Croatia from the menu Geographical Area, then click on the Search button and a map opens with light blue circles along the coasts of Croatia, and below the map a list of all the marinas and anchorages.

Choosing a ports

Portolano port of Mali Lošinj

I begin to examine the ports I might find on my route.
For example, the port of Mali Lošinj. Clicking on the icon with the bollard brings up a comic strip with the name of the ports, and clicking on that opens a tab.

The marina card contains all the data to identify it, from coordinates to telephone and postal contact details to the Website.
It then contains the physical characteristics of the port (type of seabed, minimum and maximum draught, etc.), the hours, and the services provided: from the presence of moorers or divers to the possibility of repairing breakdowns or refueling.
There is then a descriptive card of the marina and, of course, a navigable map with satellite photos.

If I am browsing the portolano online from my cell phone and want to book it, I will simply tap the phone number to call the facility directly and ask for information.

And if the marina doesn’t appeal to me or I want to feel free, I can simply tap into the list of nearest Anchorages and enjoy a starry night at anchor.

Saving online portolan bookmarks

Portolano port of Lošinj Croatia

If the ports is right for me and I want to keep it in my itinerary, I can save it in Favorites.
Just click on the little star in the upper right corner and the port’s card will be recorded in my personal list.

While I’m at it, I also examine the anchorages reported at Unije Island, not far from there. In addition to the map and satellite photo, the card also tells me maximum and minimum draughts, the quality of the sheltering and bottom, and points out other anchorages nearby. A note under Dangers: “Very busy bay, watch out for anchorages.” Human hazard: always the most fearsome.

I save the Ports and Anchorages I am interested in so that I can find them again when I am sailing. Just log into my personal area and select “My Favorites.”

Print a card for a ports or anchorages

Since caution is never too much and my cell phone doesn’t always get reception (mine, then, often end up in the water), I print out my Ports and Anchorages cards so I can take them on a cruise in a handy laminated-page folder.
I can also save the cards in pdf format on my tablet or phone.

And it’s not worth the bluff, because the Yacht Digest editorial staff will check everything ;)

Portolano, satellite view of a portYACHT DIGEST publishes the Mediterranean’s largest and most comprehensive pilot book, a guide to ports and anchorages containing over 1,500 occurrences, surveyed in one large digital publication.

Searchable from any device, the tabs of ports or anchorages contain the essential information for each boater, a description, satellite views, and are enriched with photos or videos. All this greatly aids the understanding of the anchorage or ports we want to reach the moment we choose it.

Another great advantage of the Tuttobarche pilot book is that Ports and anchorages are on the same cartography, an essential condition for moving around safely when, for example, we can’t find room in a port and need or want to shelter in an anchorage protected from a certain weather phenomenon.

yacht digest pilot's guide to ports and anchoragesIf we consult the portbook from a smartphone or tablet, the telephone numbers of the ports are clickable directly, so we can call the facilities we are interested in without any other steps and ask for availability for moorings.

Do you need to sell your boat? You are in the right place! yachtdigest.com is in fact the largest online portal on recreational boating and in this section you will be able to write your ad for free if you want to sell your boat. Adding a new sales message is very simple and intuitive as is finding a boat you are interested in buying, but to make your listing even more appealing, we want to give you some general but important pointers that you can follow if you wish.

First of all, try to personalize your ad, describing the history of the boat and perhaps the reason why you are selling it, this way you will gain more trust from the reader.

You can call it “half-new” if it is almost new, or “used” by specifying whether or not it is in good condition. It indicates the condition of the engines, the year of registration, how many owners it has had-most importantly, it indicates whether the boat has been owned by a single owner: it increases interest to those reading the ad.

The goodness of your craft must shine through in your message, because before you can convince someone, you yourself must be convinced that the product is good.

It is important that no spelling errors are made in the advertisement, so reread the message well before putting it online. The language then must be clear and simple, understandable to all.

It serves to attract interest and induce the reader to continue reading; it is the most important part and should summarize in one line the whole message we want to give. Unfortunately, you don’t have much chance to stand out much except with something really original to attract attention. So focus on truly original details of the boat, its real qualities: in the yachtdigest.com portal this brief summary will appear by hovering over the picture of the boat with the mouse.

It is important to clearly include the general record of the vessel. Always enter: shipyard, model, length, width, draft, engines, number of cabins, year of construction, price.

In the boat sheet accurately enter all boat details, standard and extra equipment. It is useful to communicate many details and details for those who are really interested and will continue reading beyond the first few lines.

Suggest to the reader who wants to buy the best features of your craft, and do not indicate-unless it is necessary to inform the buyer in advance-information that might negatively influence the reader.

Always indicate the price. Unless you absolutely do not want to deal, we recommend adding the words “price negotiable” which gives an incentive for the buyer to contact you.
