Description

The New Port of Crotone is located on the northern side of the Ionian coast of the Calabrian town, separated from the Old Port by the industrial zone located at the tip of the Crotone promontory.

In addition to its location, the New Port differs from the Old Port in its intended use. In fact, while the Old Port is used for tourism or by small local fishing boats, the New Port is used primarily for industrial and commercial purposes. However, with prior authorization from the Port Authority,recreational boats arealso permittedto enter.

Due to the natural shape of the coastline—with two inlets extending from the Town on opposite sides all the way to Capo Colonna and Cirò Marina—the port of Crotone was founded as early as the 7th century B.C. by the emerging colony of Greece. Thanks to its strategic location at the center of the Ionian Sea, the port quickly developed into a hub for trade routes throughout the Mediterranean. After a period of decline during the Middle Ages, the port of Crotone resumed its activities around 1500 under Spanish rule, although its true revival occurred in the 1920s and 1930s, coinciding with the industrial boom in the Calabrian region.

Protected by a long outer breakwater and a shorter inner breakwater, the Porto Nuovo of Crotone encloses a basin measuring 120,000 m2, with a water depth of approximately 8.5 meters. As reported by local government websites, the area is sometimes subject to very dense fog, which can reduce visibility to just a few hundred meters. It should also be noted that there is a sunken wreck located 0.5 meters from the breakwater’s red marker, with a water depth of approximately 4 meters. The prevailing winds at Porto Nuovo di Crotone in winter are the tramontana and winds from the first and second quadrants, while in spring, winds from the first quadrant prevail. The tramontana blows very violently in winter and, together with the sirocco, causes strong currents off the coast of the port. The safest anchorages near the New Port of Crotone are located south of Capo Rizzuto and north of Capo Colonna.

Being a commercial port, the New Port of Crotone, also offers pilotage service, for the entry of bulkier vessels.
