Volme is a small Istrian village located on the Premantura Peninsula, the southernmost tip of Istria, just a few kilometers from Pula. Here you can find various services (a pharmacy, grocery store, bank, and gas station), and as in most of the Istrian coast—which is now highly touristy—you can find various related services such as car and jet ski rentals, and there are opportunities to enjoy numerous sports, including scuba diving. The area’s bike paths—connected by various trails—are very popular with tourists, offering long and interesting routes through nature. The Premantura Peninsula is one of the most beautiful natural areas on the entire Istrian peninsula and also one of the most pristine, thanks to its designation as a “protected area”; the flora is very diverse, and various species of orchids can be found there. Along the coast, there are caves and small islets, and the beaches are rocky.

The port of Volme is located in Paltana Bay (Porto Olmo Grande). The bay is very large; there has been a lot of construction in this area in recent years, and you can still see active construction sites. The marina is part of a much larger complex consisting of villas and apartments. You can moor here, but first you must stop at the pier, where the manager is stationed at the base; he will direct you to a berth in the marina and where you can pay—daily berths are also available. When approaching from the south, it is advisable to stay offshore and to the west of the Porer rock lighthouse with its white flashing light (3 seconds), as the Istrian peninsula is full of rocks and shoals; and in this area, cross-seas sometimes occur with very irregular currents reaching up to 3 knots. For those wishing to pass to the east—such as those wanting to visit the islet of Feloniga, where there are dinosaur footprints—approach the area only when the sea is very calm and visibility is excellent.

Until a few years ago (during construction), sailors avoided the area due to unpleasant incidents such as thefts and the presence of the construction site. The “Aparthotel del Mar” complex has now been completed and is clearly visible on the left as you enter the bay. Ultimately, the port of Volme is well laid out because, in addition to offering good protection from the winds, it is logistically well-positioned given its proximity to both the Premantura Peninsula and Pula. It is not suitable for sailors seeking tranquility and wishing to avoid urban areas.
