Prohibitions:

Sailing within the harbor is prohibited. Mooring at the S. Barbara quay or the Molo delle Grotte is prohibited while refueling operations are in progress. Mooring at the head of the Molo delle Grotte or on the starboard side is prohibited, as these areas are reserved exclusively for the Coast Guard.

Description

The Old Port of Porto Ercole overlooks the Tyrrhenian Sea and is located between Punta dello Scoglione and the Santa Barbara pier, which is 315 meters long and equipped with mooring rings. The Old Port is located in the central part of Porto Ercole’s more modern area.

To the north of the port rise two promontories on which the old guard fortifications of Fort Filippo and Fort Santa Caterina stand out; on the southern side is another promontory, on which the Aldobrandesque fortress was built in ancient times to protect the town and port.

The Porto Ercole area is rich in history: Porto Vecchio was a strategic port of fundamental importance as early as the Middle Ages, first for the Aldobrandeschi family and later for the Republic of Siena. When Porto Ercole was annexed to the State of the Presidi during the 16th century, the Spanish further improved the port’s infrastructure and built new watchtowers on the surrounding hills.

The port consists of three piers: Molo Sanità, Molo delle Grotte, and Moletto delle Grotte. The piers are connected by a waterfront promenade, the Andrea Doria Promenade, from which five floating docks branch off; these are operated under private concessions. These piers offer a total of 825 berths, including two reserved exclusively for transit.

The maximum length allowed for boats is 24 meters when mooring at docks and 14 meters for boats in transit.

The seabed, muddy in the center and rocky near the breakwater, varies greatly in depth: in the basin it ranges from a minimum of 1.5 meters to a maximum of 7 meters, while at the dock the depth is between 0.5 and 3 meters.

The mechanical equipment available within the port includes a fixed crane with a capacity of up to 5 metric tons and a mobile crane with a capacity of 25 metric tons. There is also a dry dock capable of handling vessels weighing up to 500 metric tons and a slipway. The ports offer electrical and electronic repairs, as well as repairs to engines and wooden or fiberglass hulls. Sail repairs are also available.

The fuel station is located on the dock and dispenses gasoline, diesel, and mixed fuel. It is open only during the summer season from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. There are 180 electrical outlets and 10 hose connections available. Water is available only from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

The starboard side and the head of the Caves Pier are reserved exclusively for the Coast Guard.
